Elizabeth Swann, the daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann, grew up in the high society of
Port Royal. At a young age she often fantasizes about pirates and life at sea. Her fantasy may
have been fueled somewhat by her association with William Turner, who Elizabeth, then twelve,
met when she and her father were en route to Port Royal from England. Will, also about twelve,
was rescued clinging to floating wreckage, the victim of a pirate attack. Over the years she grew
a deep fondness for Will but, being a lady of stature, never pursued a relationship with him.
Some years later Elizabeth is kidnapped by the crew of the Black Pearl, lead by Captain
Barbossa. Will Turner, aided by Captain Jack Sparrow, comes to her rescue and finally
confesses his love for her. She returns his love and the two set off to be married.
On the day of their wedding she and Will are arrested by Lord Cutler Beckett of the East
India Trading Company for helping Jack Sparrow escape his execution. Will is sent on a
mission by Beckett to recover an item from Jack Sparrow and in return Elizabeth will be set
free. Elizabeth escapes her captivity and eventually ends up in the arms of her true love once
more. Things are not so well, however, as their lives are now threatened by the Kraken, a
fierce sea creature controlled by Davy Jones, the captain of the Flying Dutchman, who is after
Jack Sparrow's soul. Knowing it to be the only way to save her and the one she loves,
Elizabeth sacrifices Jack to the Kraken.
Their lives saved, Elizabeth feels deep remorse for killing Jack Sparrow and seeks to help
rescue him from Davy Jones Locker, even though it means teaming up with Captain Barbossa,
the very man that kidnapped her a year ago.
After helping rescue Jack from "the Locker" Elizabeth is captured by Captain Sao Feng who,
upon his death, names her Captain of his ship the Empress. Along with her new status as
Captain, Elizabeth is also named the Pirate Lord of the South China Sea and is later voted
The Pirate King by the Brethren Court. Now King, she declarers war against Cutler Beckett
and the East India Trading Company and set off to battle their vast armada.
During the battle, Will proposes to Elizabeth, and Captain
Barbossa marries them amidst the fighting. As the Black Pearl
and the Flying Dutchman clash, Davy Jones mortally wounds
Will. As Will lies dying, Jack Sparrow saves Will by helping him
stab Jones' heart, killing Jones. As Bootstrap Bill, Will's long
lost father, cuts out Will's heart and places it in the Dead Man's
Chest, Jack and Elizabeth escape before the Dutchman sinks
to the ocean floor. It quickly resurfaces with Captain Will
Turner at the helm. With the Flying Dutchman now on their side,
the pirates destroy Cutler Beckett's ship, and the armada
retreats.
Although Will's life has been saved, he is bound for ten years to serve aboard the Dutchman as
the ferryman for souls lost at sea, allowed to step on land once every ten years. Will and
Elizabeth spend this one day on an island and consummate their marriage. Will returns to the
Dutchman at sunset, but before leaving gives Elizabeth the Dead Man's
Chest containing his beating heart for safekeeping.
Ten years later Elizabeth takes her ten year old son, William Turner III, to that same island to
meet his father for the first time.
Elizabeth Swann is a passionate and strong leader. She was trained by Will Turner in the art
of sword play and is very skilled and fierce fighter. She cares deeply for those she loves and is
always willing to do whatever it takes to protect them.
Pirate History:
The Dead Man's Chest: Edward Teach, 'Blackbeard,' marooned some of his crew that he considered "mutinous" upon a tiny island off Tortola in the
British Virgin Islands. It is now called Dead Chest Island. The rock was known to sailors as 'The Dead Man's Chest' as nothing could live there except lizards,
snakes, and mosquitoes. Each mutineer was handed a cutlass and a bottle of rum, in the hope that they would kill each other, but a month later when he visited,
fifteen were all still alive.
The incident sparked the verse in Stevenson's 'Treasure Island':
Fifteen men on the dead man's chest,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Drink and the Devil had done for the rest,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
In the Pirates of the Caribbean© Trilogy the part of Elizabeth Swann is played by Keira Knightley.
