Name:
Gabriel Whalen Hirst
Biography:
Gabriel Whalen Hirst was born to nobility in London, the son of Captain Charles Hirst of the Royal Navy and his
wife Catherine. Raised primarily by his mother he was given all the education he would need to follow in his
father’s footsteps. In between his studies Gabriel became fascinated with tales of war from an old ex-naval
captain, Alexander Barrett, who lived nearby. Gabriel learned much of war as Alexander shared tales of his part
in the Spanish’s defeat at Cádiz as well as other bouts between the English and Spanish Armadas.
When Gabriel was of age he joined the Royal Navy shortly before his father’s retirement. He quickly became an
exceedingly efficient sailor with a higher mastery in bladed weaponry. After a short while he was promoted to
the rank of Lieutenant aboard the HMS Century under the command of Admiral Bratton. One cold January night
the ships boatswain turned up dead in the cargo hold with an axe wound to the back. Lieutenant Hirst, who had
become famous for his use of duel boarding axes in battle, was the first suspect.
Upon a search of his belongings Lieutenant Hirst’s one boarding axe was found with fresh blood on it. Despite
his claims of innocence Lieutenant Hirst was thrown in the brig until the ship could make port. Hot with rage,
Hirst continued to scream that he had been set up. When the HMS Century finally docked he was found guilty,
stripped of his rank and sentanced to death with charges of Murder and Treason.
To any who knew the resolve of Gabriel they would not have moved him as nonchalantly as had been
performed. Two guards escorted him from his cell and found themselves more interested in their own
conversation to notice what was about to transpire. Gabriel swept one guard off his feet with speed and shoved
the other one against the wall hard with his shoulder. An elbow to the first left them both out cold. Stealing the
keys to his shackles and freeing himself, Hirst fled off into the night.
That was the last anyone saw of him. The man who formerly went by Gabriel Hirst wen into hiding and forged
a new name for himself. The face and style was still that of Gabriel’s, but the name was now Rowland Howe. He
had been on the run and turned up in Tortuga looking for work. He found himself aboard a few different
privateer vessels still sporting his trademark boarding axes but rarely getting the chance to utilize his skills.
Most recently, a ship called The Black Pearl found its way to Tortuga looking for additional crew and Rowland
found it the perfect crew for his talents to finally find good use.

Privateers:
Semi-official pirates, who supplemented a country's navy with private ships of war. Given Letters of Marque they were
allowed to attack ships of an enemy country in times of war and keep large percentage of any plunder. With the end of
the War of the Spanish Succession in 1713, there were literally thousands of privateers in the Caribbean and
European waters.
