Sailor Superstitions:
Pirates and sailors alike shared many superstitions. Some of these included the belief that throwing stones into the sea
would cause great waves and storms. Sea life such as sharks and manta rays were also thought to be bad luck. Sharks
following a ship were thought of as a sign of death and manta rays were thought to attach themselves to anchors and
drag a ship to the bottom of the sea. Pirates and sailors would often carry or wear small trinkets considered to be good
luck and repel ill fortune. One of the most common was the wearing of gold earrings. The belief was that it would
prevent a sailor from drowning and upon their death the gold would be used to provide them with a decent burial.
Name:
Grace Morgan

Biography:
It is said that Grace Morgan was born with pirating in her blood. Her father was a successful pirate captain,
sailing the grand ship,
The Gambler’s Debt, since long before she was born.

She grew up on the ship, learning the pirate's code at an early age, her father teaching her the value of honor
amidst her profession: Only kill to defend and take only from those who can afford to give. On top of simple
pirating, her father had an attraction to treasure hunting and adventure, often leading his crew on exotic
escapades in search of rich legends and treasures of mystic lore.

His life’s work was made up of journals and parchments full of maps and clues aiding in pursuit of his one
obsession: the mythical Luckstone, an artifact rumored to be one of the eyes of a long dead pagan god. Said to
bestow unfailing luck and good fortune to its owner, the stone’s existence was revealed to him by a dying
shamaness. The path of riddles eluded him until his own death, at which point, he left a young Grace his ship
and loyal crew, all of his belongings, logs and journals. Sailing the
The Gambler’s Debt in her father’s spirit,
Grace continued his legacy.

On a particular adventure into the Caribbean, she happened upon a mysterious woman who had heard of her
father’s reputation and was familiar with his obsession. For a price, one gladly paid with Grace’s own funds,
she provided what was the missing piece to the mystery of the Luckstone. What Grace did not know was that
other ears were listening that night.

Hurrying back to set sail, she pulled out all of her father’s notes, using the new information to complete the
riddles and cryptic codes used by the ancients to guard the location of the Luckstone. Her navigator set the
new course and
The Gambler's Debt and her crew eagerly set off in search of Grace’s father’s greatest dream.

Upon reaching an ominous isle, some say the crew fought monsters unimaginable or a ghost crew of an
ancient ship. Still more say they were put to the test with more riddles and yet others claim they simply
walked in and, in true pirate form, took one of the greatest treasures of legend.

Regardless of the truth, around the neck of Grace Morgan would rest the Luckstone, worn proudly for her
father, for his information was right all along, simply incomplete. The crew divided the rest of the treasure, as
Grace only wanted the stone.

The stories of the stone were quickly proven true.  Given that no one knew of the Luckstone’s discovery early
on, many bets were won, many battles victorious, and for eight years,
The Gambler’s Debt never knew defeat.
Christened "Lucky Morgan" for her uncanny luck, the very sight of her colors caused ships to flee or surrender
in the face of certain defeat. Disbelievers tested her luck in gambling bouts and she made a small fortune
simply off of the pride of drunken men. Never harmed, never maimed, never defeated, Lucky Morgan and
The
Gambler’s Debt
seemed immortal.

This was all until the day the greed of one of her own crew would betray her, for it so happened that the
fateful day Grace was told that missing piece of information, a certain wicked Captain Kreegan, one old
cunning pirate nemesis of her father, had been the ears listening in, waiting and biding his time. He let Grace
and her crew grow complacent in their magical luck.

He came to her cook one night in port and offered him a well-spun tale of riches and a position on his own
crew if he would help in a most devious plan. Captain Kreegan gave the cook a sleeping draught and
instructions, leaving the man to stew in his greed which was only fed by the idea of the Luckstone. Surely
Captain Kreegan could secure even more wealth with such an item… Surely the cook’s share of the treasure
would be larger when he obtained his new position…

These things flashed through his mind as he slipped the draught into Lucky Morgan’s wine that evening
during their shore leave, celebrating yet another victory. This celebration would be their last. After the drugs
took affect, he stole the amulet from her neck and slipped away to meet Kreegan, setting sail with him
immediately.

Upon awakening, Morgan discovered what had taken place. Angered and suddenly scared, she decided to hide
the truth from the crew, seeking out a jeweler to make a replica of her precious Luckstone. She did not want
to break the crew’s spirits, hoping her loyal cook would return or she could find it before too much time
passed.

It was not to be, however, and as they set sail, Captain Kreegan was waiting. He attacked their ship, stealing
everything they had and sinking the vessel, leaving the not-so-Lucky Grace and the survivors to be picked up
by Captain Gull of
the Silver Pelican, a final act of luck that Grace is convinced her father’s spirit had a hand in.

Lucky Morgan is laying low for now, plotting her revenge on Captain Kreegan and the retaking of what
treasure is rightfully hers… and with it, the restoration of her reputation.
