Name:
Calico Kate

Biography:
Born to a working class Scottish family of weavers and spinners, with the blood of Galbraith in her veins, all did
not bode well for the young lass who had found herself barely surviving on the streets of London. Her accent
alone would mean trouble for her if she spoke so Kate took to staying alone, speaking to no one and plying her
trade as a weaver to the family she was indentured to.

Kate had heard tales of a place across the great sea where people could make their own fortune, so she began to
form a plan to get herself there one way or another.

Finding passage on a ship turned out to be the easy part, a French merchant ship was in port and in need of a
seamstress, offering free passage to the new world for the services. That was when Kate took her first step on a
course that led straight to a pirates life. She left England for good, a runaway servant.

Pirates took the ship two weeks out and Kate stayed her course, defending herself and even running a dagger
through one of the annoying French sailor to prove to the pirates her desire for freedom. The pirate captain was
much impressed and he indeed was also in need of a seamstress. Kate was treated well and soon had the captain
decked out in his famous namesake Calico clothes. In return for her service she soon had all the makings for a
fine dress for herself. The dress would eventually became her namesake as well.

For her good services the captain paid her well and eventually go ashore at Port Royal. She was able to attain a
job as a local dress maker. Time and time again she saw her creations worn by the high society, even the
governor's daughter, and watched her boss take all the credit. Tired of this treatment Calico Kate left Port Royal
for a place where she could once again enjoy the freedom she felt on the pirate ship.

There was not much need for a seamstress in such a place so she got a job as a bar maid with the promise never
to return to sea. She went straight  to work, still doing some sewing and knitting on the side, and straight into
the weather eye of a pirate called Mr. Covington, but that is another story.
