Captain of the Silver Pelican
Created and Portrayed by:
Cornelius Gull was born in England, the son of a blacksmith who made arms for the kings militia.
One day as a young lad, Cornelius was throwing daggers at the front door when a militia officer
unfortunately opened the door and was stuck by a dagger which killed him instantly. Not
knowing what to do, Cornelius ran for his life. He headed for the docks where he jumped
aboard a ship in order to hide. As bad luck would have it, the ship left port and headed out to
sea.
After a time he was discovered by the ships crew. He could have been thrown overboard but
instead he was put to work doing all of the dirtiest jobs on the ship. So this actually begins the
adventure of pirating for Cornelius. The ship was bound for Tortuga, the main haven for
pirates, to deliver supplies. As soon as the ship was docked, he departed and was on the run
again. He hid out until the ship left port thinking it would be safe to stop hiding.
He eventually got a job at one of the local tavern doing every dirty job in the place, not to
different from being on the ship. He continued this job for a few years saving his gold in hopes
of leaving this place. Being a young man now, he was able to listen and learn from the pirates
that frequented the establishment. He learned how to swear, cheat, swindle, fire a pistol, fight
with a sword, and drink rum... all the necessary things a pirate must have in his inventory.
One fateful evening he was gambling with a few of the despicable patrons taking all their gold
with his gambling expertise. Eventually all that was left was one captain who was almost drained
of gold but refused to withdraw from betting; so he bet his entire ship against one roll of the
dice. Well, as luck would have it, Cornelius won the roll and became the owner and captain of a
ship. The dethroned captain, not liking what happened, immediately challenged Cornelius to a
duel. Others in the tavern saw what was happening and immediately grabbed this captain and
took him out and hung him. "I guess he wasn't keeping with the code, being a poor loser and all."
So now it was Captain Cornelius Gull! After
acquiring a crew and renaming the ship the Silver
Pelican, he set sail for adventure. Many years of
pirating passed quickly, his fortune was second to
none. Being an older pirate hasn't slowed Captain
C. Gull down one bit, just made him craftier.
Eventually he met Captain Jack Sparrow along with
Captain Barbossa, and an interesting friendship
arose... but that's another story.
Pirate History:
Tortuga: The most famous pirate island, just off north-west Hispaniola. It resembles a great 'sea-tortoise' or turtle, so was called by the Spanish Tortuga del
Mar. The Spanish in Santo Domingo regularly attacked the buccaneers in Western Hispaniola, and Tortuga was more easy to defend and escape from.
French governors relied upon buccaneers for local defence. In their turn, buccaneers needed such safe havens and could not let them be taken by the Spanish.
Eventually the buccaneers began to overwhelm the population. It was reported that its French governor finally imported hundreds of prostitutes to try and wean
buccaneers away from the common population. But, eventually the island was overrun and Petit Goave replaced it as a pirate haven during the late 17th century.
