Little is known about Hector Barbossa before he joined the Black Pearl crew as first mate,
but what is known is that his family was very poor, and he ran away from home when he was about
13. He went to the sea, saw how well the captains and officers lived and decided to become a
captain himself. At first, he wanted to be an honest seaman, but later he recognized that it
would be easier for him to make a career if he broke laws, and so he became a pirate.
First Mate Barbossa became captain of the Black Pearl after he mutinied against Jack
Sparrow and left him marooned on an island to die. Ten years after the betrayal Jack exacts
his revenge against Barbossa by shooting him dead and reclaiming captaincy of the Black Pearl.
One year later he is brought back for the dead by Tia Dalma to help save his murderer, Jack
Sparrow, from Davy Jones' Locker. After rescuing Jack and helping defeat the forces of
Lord Beckett Barbossa again commandeers the Pearl, stranding Jack and Mr. Gibbs in
Tortuga. The crew mildly protest leaving Jack Sparrow behind (again), saying they want
Barbossa to share the bearings to their next treasure. Barbossa agrees and unrolls the chart,
only to discover that Jack has already removed and stole its middle.
Captain Barbossa has no remorse for those in his way as he is very skilled with a sword, and
supposedly learned to use one from a very young age, possibly at the time he ran away.
Barbossa is very interested with his appearance, as his clothing shows. He has a vanity ring on
his finger, and some of the feathers on his hat are blue ostrich feathers. His coat buttons are
rumored to be made from melted Incan silver and his pistol was won in a duel against a Spanish
pirate.

it is very rare to see him without his favorite fruit.

Pirate History:
First Mate: On some pirate ships, this was the captain's right-hand man, who would take over if the captain was killed or incapacitated in battle. As it was the
equivalent of the often hated lieutenant's role in the Royal Navy, most pirate ships chose a quartermaster rather than a first mate.
